This course is provided for apprentices and employers with apprentices requiring off-the-job training in a practical environment.
Students engaging in an Australian School-based Apprenticeship in a college environment will be encouraged to complete up to 45% of the course in the two years at College.

This qualification delivers the basic foundations and content for students to develop the skills and knowledge used in the metal engineering and manufacturing industry. This program is designed for a general mechanical tradesperson. Students will learn how to apply safe work practices necessary for the safe use and maintenance of a wide range of tools and equipment generally used on-the-job. These include: • lathes • milling machinery • grinding machinery • welding equipment • hydraulic copying equipment • hydraulic presses • thread cutting machinery

Job summary: The apprentice undertaking this role will be involved in: • enabling the manufacture of engineering products • repair and replacement of components, parts or other items • installation of plant and machinery • design and manufacture of modifications to existing components • maintenance of plant and equipment • construction and commissioning work.
Duties may also involve the repair of shipping machinery (ie: winches, glands, drive shafts, turbines etc) and power station maintenance. The apprentice would normally work in a workshop but may on occasion perform work away from his normal workplace. Apprentices involved in this type of work would work in an enclosed and well equipped workshop, use specialist measuring equipment and a range of hand tools, work from detailed drawings and be expected to use a variety of machining equipment. The apprentice may operate metal/ceramic spraying equipment, hydraulic test equipment and undertake the treatment of metals (oil baths, furnaces, gas or electric ovens etc).
