Job summary: Apprentices undertaking this apprenticeship will be able to install and maintain electrical components, wiring, equipment and systems and may work in specialised areas of the electrical industry. Areas of specialisation are as follow:
- Control - Apprentices specialising in this area will install, maintain and repair industry control systems and equipment that involve pneumatic, mechanical, electrical/electronic instrumentation systems and equipment.
- Energy Supply - Apprentices specialising in this area will install and maintain apparatus and equipment belonging to electricity distributors, this can range from, equipment in consumers’ switchboards to substations and control centres. Apprentices will work in industrial workshops, substations, switch yards and premises pertaining to the electrical distributors.
- Fire Protection - Apprentices specialising in this area will install fire protection alarm wiring in a variety of premises including residential, commercial and industrial settings and the maintenance of fire detection equipment, apparatus and devices contained therein.
- Installation and Servicing - Apprentices specialising in this area will install wiring in a variety of residential, commercial and industrial premises, this includes the maintenance of equipment, apparatus and devices contained therein.
- Maritime Installation - Apprentices specialising in maritime installation will install and maintain equipment and apparatus on ships, submersibles, shipyards and off shore drilling platforms.
Mining - Apprentices specialising in mining will install and maintain equipment and apparatus in open cut and under ground mines, workshops specialising in mining equipment, collieries, associated land drilling and mining operations.
- Plant Servicing - Apprentices specialising in this area will install and maintain equipment and apparatus associated with mobile and stationary plant in commercial and industrial settings.
- Process - Apprentices specialising in this area will install, maintain and repair process control systems and equipment that involve pneumatic, hydraulic mechanical and electrical/electronic instrumentation systems and equipment.
- Security - Apprentices specialising in this area will install, commission, maintain and repair equipment used to maintain the security of commercial and domestic premises.
Signalling (Rail) - Apprentices specialising in this area will be involved in the installation and maintenance of signalling systems used for the control of public transport, especially trains and automobile traffic. This would include working in manufacturing workshops, industrial base workshops and equipped motor vehicles.

Apprenticeship Probation/Duration Details: All Apprenticeships have a nominal term - this is the timeframe that is on the Apprenticeship training contract. Some Apprentice’s will now also have an Expected Duration. The Expected Duration is the amount of time that it’s reasonably expected that someone could become competent and complete their Apprenticeship. Apprentice’s Training Plans will now be developed using the Expected Duration timeframe rather than the contract’s nominal term.

Entry requirements: It is recommended that apprentices have a high level of maths for entry into this qualification. Some apprentices may require appropriate bridging training to ensure successful completion.
School-based and part-time applicants must apply through the QUSITAB part-time and school-based policy.
