Prime Minister's 2010 Vocational Prizes awarded
The Minister for School Education, the Hon Peter Garrett MP, has announced the winners of the 2010 Australian Vocational Student Prize and Prime Minister’s award for Skills Excellence in School.
This course is provided for apprentices and employers with apprentices requiring off-the-job training in a practical environment.

This qualification delivers the basic foundations and content for students to develop the skills and knowledge used in the automotive mechanical technology sector which includes inspection, service and repair. It also provides you students the opportunity to specialise in an industry sector by selecting the relevant descriptor specific to your enterprise requirements. You will learn skills contained in the units of competence relevant to the descriptors. You will also learn how to apply safe work practices and carry out diagnostic procedures.
The apprentice undertaking this role will primarily service and repair the mechanical parts of motor vehicles such as the engine, transmission (clutch, gear box and differential) and the suspension systems (springs, steering, brakes, wheels and tyres). The apprentice will also perform tasks including: discussing problems with vehicle drivers to discover faults and carrying out their own diagnosis procedures; repair and service cooling systems, fuel systems, air conditioning and emission control systems, clutch assemblies, manual and automatic transmissions, braking systems, final drive assemblies and steering and suspension systems. The repair of ignition, electronic engine management and electrical systems are also encompassed in the motor mechanic's duties. With the rapid changes in automotive technology, motor mechanics are becoming more specialised in their areas of work.
