Course Overview

This course is provided for students engaging in an Australian School-based Apprenticeship under the supervision of a Registered Training Organisation.

They will be encouraged to complete up to 45% of the apprenticeship competencies in the two years at the Trade College.

This School-based Apprenticeship delivers the basic foundations and content for students to develop the skills and knowledge used in the building and construction industry, specialising in plumbing techniques. Students will also learn how to apply safe work practices necessary for the safe use and maintenance of a wide range of tools and equipment generally use on-the-job. These include:

  • power tools
  • cement mixers
  • welding equipment (plastic and metal)

Job summary:

Plumbers lay out, test and maintain pipes, fixtures, metal roofing, fittings, gas meters and regulators. The plumbing apprentice will perform tasks including:

  • Lay out, test and maintain pipes, fixtures, metal roofing, fittings, gas meters and regulators
  • Find and mark positions for connections & pipework, cut holes through walls and floors to accommodate pipes, measure pipes and mark cutting or bending lines
  • Cut, thread and bend pipes, assemble and install piping, valves and fittings, join pipe sections and secure pipes
  • Test lines according to plumbing regulations
  • Install equipment such as boilers, pumps, heating and cooling systems, gas appliances, water tanks, water heaters, solar water-heating systems, fixtures such as toilets, wash basins and industrial processing units
  • Maintain and repair plumbing systems
