School-based Program

Do Senior. Start a Trade. Get Paid!

Co-Educational Independent Senior Secondary School
"One-stop-shop" from Senior School to fully qualified tradie

Year 11 and 12 students enrol and attend the College in a full time capacity adhering to all the guidelines of discipline and uniforms. The focus is "Excellence while getting a Trade" which generates a unique campus atmosphere.

They are provided with an opportunity to start their trade career (at Certificate III level of their chosen trade) at the end of Year 10 and study for their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) at the same time. Once they have graduated from the "School Program" (usually at the end of Year 12), they move to the component of their apprenticeship where they work full time with their employer and can return to the College for their RTO Block training to complete their trade qualification.

Some of the College's 2007 Foundation students, are testimony to the success of the program, having already completed their trade qualifications in a range of trades (carpentry, cabinet making, metals, commercial cookery).

Refer to the guideline in the "Apprenticeship Time Line" diagram. Please note that this applies to those undertaking an apprenticeship and outcomes are subject to all criteria being met - this timeline does not necessarily relate to school-based traineeships.

Students signed into an Australian School-based Apprenticeship are able to complete up to 45% of their full apprenticeship by the end of Year 12 (if all criteria are met). The very successful "4 weeks-at-work and 4 weeks-at-College" rotational model for trade training and curriculum delivery, developed to suit the needs of the student-apprentices and employers, accelerates trade training and subsequently full time placement.

Trade training delivered by industry-current trainers in the College's industry-standard facilities on site is very convenient for the students and also gives them the edge compared to most trade training delivery methods in the school-based environment.

The College provides training in the following industry areas:

  • Automotive (Mechanical Technology)
  • Electrotechnology/Electrician
  • Commercial Cookery/Chef and Front of House
  • Metal and Engineering (Fitting and Fabrication)
  • Building and Construction (Carpentry, Cabinet-Making and Plumbing)

Qualifications (including a Certificate III and a partial apprenticeship qualification) are recognised by "higher learning" educational institutions or assist in gaining a full time apprenticeship and further trade qualifications. A Senior Certificate (QCE) and an OP equivalent Selection Rank Score will also be issued on request. As well, the College graduates will have had two years exposure working in a business, and have a better understanding of the key elements to succeed in business. For more information on the QCE or Qld Core Skills Test, go to this section in this menu.

If you would like to find out more about the ASbA Program, the next monthly Information Evening is advertised on this website or alternatively, call the Registrar on 3414 5960 or contact the College through the Contact Us email on this page.
