Prime Minister's 2010 Vocational Prizes awarded
The Minister for School Education, the Hon Peter Garrett MP, has announced the winners of the 2010 Australian Vocational Student Prize and Prime Minister’s award for Skills Excellence in School.
Commercial Cookery student-apprentice Thomas chose to undertake an Australian School-based Apprenticeship at the Australian Trade College North Brisbane because of a driving ambition to become a Chef.
"My long term plan is to open up my own restaurant and to be the best chef I can be", says Thomas. "I am really enjoying my apprenticeship. It's an amazing learning experience and to have the ability to work in a four week block is great. The College makes it easy to learn and to better myself."
Lucie Cochrane, Human Resources Manager, of the Kedron-Wavell Services Club Inc where Thomas is undertaking his School-based Apprenticeship has found the Australian Trade College North Brisbane to be a professional organisation, producing high quality student-apprentices. She says," A benefit to our Club is the student-apprentice rotation and the flexibility that this offers: we employ four student-apprentices, essentially affording us two full-time student-apprentices that do not require time to attend TAFE! Furthermore, the staff members at the College are always available to assist with any problem and have demonstrated great support in the progress of the student-apprentices.
Sharon joined the Australian Trade College in 2008 and chose Carpentry for her Apprenticeship. As part of her Structured Workplace Learning, Sharon spent a week with Melaway Carpentry on a building site in North Lakes.
"It is certainly more hands on than at College, is a lot harder and it certainly gives you a real taste for what it is like in the workplace" says Sharon. She has enjoyed her first few weeks at College and was looking forward to attending the Pindari camp.
Wayne Smith of Melaway Carpentry says "I am impressed by the quality of student-apprentices that come from the Australian Trade College North Brisbane and the fact that they are willing to learn. The local Building and Construction Industry has for a long time suffered poorly trained apprentices and Industry will certainly benefit from the establishment of the Australian Trade College North Brisbane."
"My experience has been that the school has outstanding professional qualities. The enforcement of rules and standards, with uniforms and behaviour is to be commended …………"Mitch actually enjoys going to school now…We drive from Morningside to Scarborough every day but it has been worth every drive and every traffic jam"
"Since becoming a student at the Australian Trade College North Brisbane, my son, Aaron has matured beyond belief…….. he is happy at school."
"For Sean, his attendance at the ATCNB has been a wonderful opportunity and we are very grateful… it was a big risk taking him out of the school that his brothers and father went to.."
"Luke was in a downward spiral at school……the College has ensured his success... he now gets up at 5.30am and cycles to Petrie station to get the train to work."
The Minister for School Education, the Hon Peter Garrett MP, has announced the winners of the 2010 Australian Vocational Student Prize and Prime Minister’s award for Skills Excellence in School.
The announcement of the Australian Defence Technical Scholarships has seen the ATCNB take out 35 scholarships, an increase of 20 on last year.
