College History

Foundation CEO/Principal | Mr Terry O'Hanlon-Rose

As an initiative of the Australian government and in partnership with business and industry, the Australian Trade College North Brisbane was founded in 2006 as part of the Australian Technical Colleges Program. Located on the old Frawley College Campus at Scarborough, the buildings and grounds underwent a major refurbishment to create the industry-standard facility which now delivers trade training in traditional trades such as Automotive, Building and Construction, Commercial Cookery, Electrotechnology and Metal and Engineering.

By 2007 the College began operating as an Independent Senior Secondary College and Registered Training Organisation and welcomed its first cohort of Year 11 students who signed up for their Australian School-based Apprenticeships (Certificate III in their trade), while studying for their Senior Qualification (Queensland Certificate of Education).

At the end of 2008, 130 of these students became our first graduates, with some of them going on to achieve their full trade qualification as early as mid-year 2009. By the end of 2009, the College was named as one of five of the 24 Australian Technical Colleges established under the ATC Program, to be granted full independent operational status by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

At the start of 2010, the College began operation under two companies:

  • Australian Trade College North Brisbane (the School)
  • AustralianTrade Training College (the RTO)

The development of the International Program as well as the Fee for Service Programs delivered through the RTO have continued to sustain operations. In addition, the college has earned the respect of many in the education and training sector through its innovative ideas and flexibility of delivery.
