How a Australian School-based Apprentice can work for you!
Have you considered employing two Australian School-based Apprentices (ASbAs) from the Australian Technical College – North Brisbane rather than one first year Apprentice? The student-apprentices work on a four week rotational basis which means that you always have a first year ASbA at work - they attend College for four weeks then work with their employer for four weeks.
The Australian Technical College - North Brisbane is both an Independent Senior Secondary College and an RTO and provides a large number of Australian School-based Apprenticeships each year to industry in Carpentry, Electrotechnology, Fabrication, Fitting, Automotive, Cabinet Making, Bricklaying and Commercial Cookery.
For the first 18 months, as a School-based Apprentice, we offer off-the-job training at no cost to employers. We can provide training to 3rd and 4th year apprentices as well. Our Australian School-based Apprenticeship scheme works on a 4 week on 4 week off rotational basis for Year 11 & 12 student-apprentices. Most employers employ 2 student-apprentices back-to-back so that they always have an apprentice at the worksite.
There are a number of advantages in employing two of our student-apprentices: • You have a first year student-apprentice 52 weeks of the year. • You need a ratio of one tradesman to each student-apprentice. • You receive double the employer incentive payments for employing two student-apprentices. • Our student-apprentices are more affordable because no sick pay or holiday pay is required. • You have until the end of Year 12 to decide whether to take one or both student-apprentices ensuring consistently high work performances from both student-apprentices. • On College rotations, approximately 50% of each student-apprentice’s time is undertaken in the practical and theory areas of the trade. • A higher level of College support is provided than is usual for traditional Registered Training Organisations by Workplace Assessors. • While the student-apprentice is at College, their off-the-job training costs you nothing. • Off-the-job training is currently about 550 hours over Years 11 and 12.
During the first 16 weeks of Year 11, our student-apprentices are prepared for the workplace by completing a prevocational program where they undertake: • Certificate II in Workplace Practices • A week of Structured Workplace Learning • Competencies from the Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation (Pindari Camp—Personal Development) • Construction Blue Card Training (Safety Induction) • Senior First Aid Training • Safety Training — Trade related • Trade Training — approximately 15 hours per week
The College is happy to provide a tour of our facilities.
